02/2019 Missing Fisherman

CIAS was called out HM Coastguard to help with a search for a fisherman overboard from his vessel. Our aircraft was one of a number of SAR assets called on to assist.
The search area was off the Salcombe Coast, the sea state was rough and the wind was West Force 6.
He was located after one hour by his fishing boat and was winched aboard a Coastguard helicopter and transferred directly to Plymouth Hospital where he made a quick and full recovery.
He was fortunate to be wearing a reflective life jacket that was easily seen with the spotlights used by the helicopters as well as remaing on the sea surface.
On this occasion, we did not get airborne before he was found.
