Search Summary 2007

OPERATIONS

Searches undertaken during 2007 are listed below:-

/07  A 3¼ hour search for an unidentified distress signal.  Over 30 vessels were identified but none was in distress.  Fog delayed landing back in Guernsey by 40 minutes.

&03/07  A total of 5 hours searching for a man reported overboard from a ferry between Les Minquiers and St Malo.  A considerable time had elapsed before the service was called and no sign of the man was found.  During the search the aircraft was diverted to investigate smoke seen east of Jersey – it was due to fields set alight by French farmers.

/07  A 2¼ hour search for a man whose car had apparently been abandoned on the beach at La Rocque, Jersey.  The aircraft had to land in Jersey for a time due to thunderstorm activity, during which it was reported that the man had been located safe on land.

&06/07  A total of 2 hours searching the coast of Guernsey and Herm for a man reported missing.  Nothing located.

/07  A 1 hour search in conjunction with St Peter Port lifeboat near Icart Point following reports of a man being rescued and then being lost after falling back in the water.  Subsequently found to have been a hoax.

/07  A 1½ hour search for a diver reported missing off Fermain.  The St Peter Port lifeboat located him off Icart Point, but he sadly was found to have died.

/07  A 3 hour search in the vicinity of the estuary of the River Seine for a man reported overboard from a yacht.  Two lifeboats, an inshore lifeboat and two helicopters were also involved and one of the helicopters located the casualty who was flown to hospital in Le Havre.

/07  A 2¼ hour search in darkness using FLIR for flares reported near Les Minquiers.  Nothing found.

/07  A ½ hour search for a sportsboat believed to be at risk heading for Sark.  It was then reported safe in Herm Harbour.

/07  A 1 hour search in conjunction with the St John Ambulance inshore lifeboat for a man missing on the south east coast of Guernsey.  Man reported safe on shore.

/07  A 1½ hour search for a sea-mine reported adrift between Guernsey and Alderney.  The object was located and marked with smoke to assist the workboat Sarnia which identified it as not being dangerous.

/07  A 1½ hour search in poor visibility off St Quay Portrieux for a boat reported overdue.  The vessel was located by a French lifeboat which towed it to safety.

&16/07  A total of 6 hours searching for a boat which had hit rocks off Corbiere lighthouse.  When a lifejacket and debris were reported to have been found outside St Helier Harbour the aircraft diverted to the area and located an oil slick and an object underwater.  This was identified by St Helier lifeboat as a boat and divers confirmed it as the casualty with the occupant still on board.

/07  A 2¼ hour search for a kayak reported missing between Rozel and Les Ecrehous.  A flotation aid was located in a gully on the north coast of Jersey and the St Catherine’s lifeboat was directed to the area to recover this.  The two persons on the kayak were subsequently detained in France.

/07  Two red distress flares sighted north of Ouistreham, east of Le Havre, Calvados, Northern France.  A 3 hour search in conjunction with French lifeboat and helicopter found no sign of a vessel in distress.

/07  A 1 hour search of Guernsey south and east coast cliffs after a person reported heading towards cliffs.  A person was located and details passed to the police.

/07  Suspected persons overboard from 8m French yacht “Pou Alet”, found drifting 10 miles south of Jersey.  2½ hour search found a dinghy adrift in the vicinity of the yacht which had been taken in tow by St Helier lifeboat, but no signs of any persons.  Due to poor visibility the aircraft had to land in Jersey and wait 2 hours for an improvement.

/07  4 hour search for missing diver.  Search undertaken initially in daylight, continuing when darkness fell using the FLIR.
