Search Summary 2008OPERATIONS Searches undertaken during 2008 are listed below:-01/08 4½ hour search after a fishing vessel was reported as sunk with four crew still missing. After a considerable amount of time in the air, nothing was found. 02/08 A private aircraft had crashed into the sea, and three casualties were reported to be in the water. On route, it was reported that the three casualties had been winched to safety by the French helicopter, and the aircraft was stood down. 03/08 Five persons reported missing overboard from French fishing boat. Ten minutes after take off, St Peter Port radio reported that all five casualties had been located and safely recovered. 04/08 2¼ search after an emergency beacon was reported off the south-east coast of Guernsey. A fix was established, and debris was found. It was eventually confirmed that the beacon came from a boat which had sunk two days earlier without loss of life, and the aircraft stood down. 06/08 3hr search, initially visual changed to FLIR as darkness fell for a missing person in a small inflatable south-east of Jersey in conjunction with St Helier and St Catherine’s lifeboats and a French helicopter. Casualty reported to have been located. 07/08 1½ hr search after a jet ski was washed up on the Normandy coast and two persons reported missing. The men were reported to have been found ashore but the aircraft was then tasked to search for the source of a reported flare sighting – nothing found. 08/08 2½ hr search following report of man overboard 30 miles south of Brighton. A French helicopter located the casualty who was transferred to a Royal Navy ship and the aircraft located a life-ring floating nearby. 09/08 ½ hour search for a small powerboat reported missing in the Little Russell. A boat spotted from the aircraft on L’Ancresse beach, with occupants nearby, was identified as the missing vessel. 10/08 1 hour search following reports of an unmanned French fishing vessel in the vicinity of Portbail. No sign of the skipper was found. 11/08 1½ hour search for Jersey sports cruiser that had called Jersey coastguard by mobile phone. The vessel was located south-west of Jersey and St Helier lifeboat was directed to the scene. The ‘skyshout’ loudhailer was used to inform the casualty of the impending arrival of the lifeboat. 12/08 4 hour search in darkness for a French sailing vessel overdue on passage from Île de Chausey to St Malo. A vessel was located aground using the FLIR system. Although it was established that this was not the target vessel a French helicopter was directed to the scene and 4 people were rescued. The search for the original target continued but nothing was found. 13/08 ½ hour search for a man seen running into the sea at St Aubin. Before the aircraft arrived on the scene the man was recovered by the Jersey inshore RIB. 14/08 1¾ hour search for a missing man on the north-west coast of Jersey. The man was reported to have been found inland. 15/08 & 16/08 Total of 7 hours search following report of a light aircraft having disappeared from radar screens north of Cherbourg. Although a heat source was located with the FLIR camera nothing was found. 17/08 1 hour search following reports of a man calling help below the fort in the Pleinmont area. Nothing was found. 18/08 4 hour search for a man missing from a fishing boat north of Cherbourg. A French helicopter, lifeboat and other vessels were also searching but no trace of the casualty was found. |
