Search Summary 2003OPERATIONS Searches undertaken during 2003 are listed below:-01/03 A RIB was reported missing from St Helier harbour. After 40 minutes of searching, the boat was found safe in St Helier. 02/03 A person was reported missing from a capsized dory near Port Bail. A search lasting over 3 hours found no trace of the casualty 03/03 A flare was sighted in the shipping lane north of Alderney. A 3 hour search in conjunction with two helicopters and the Alderney lifeboat found no trace of a casualty. It subsequently transpired that a yacht which had been sighted apparently sailing normally had fired the flare, but had nevertheless continued on passage to Poole where it was found safe. 04/03 Following the sighting of flares by a yacht nothing was found. It was concluded that in conditions of exceptional visibility, the lights of a landing aircraft might have been mistaken for a flare. 05/03 A man had been reported overboard from a RIB off the north Brittany coast. A 2 hour search of the area specified by the French found nothing. 06/03 A red flare reported near the Roches Douvres lighthouse. Several Guernsey yachts were found in the area – these had not seen a flare and nothing was found. 07/03 A diver was missing in the shipping lane north of Alderney. A 3 hour search in conjunction with French helicopter found nothing. 08/03 While on training the crew were requested to investigate an apparent distress signal in the Pleinmont area. Nothing was found. 09/03 A sailing vessel reported missing off Roscoff. By the time of arrival at the search area the vessel had been located safe in harbour. 10/03 A swimmer missing in Cobo Bay. The aircraft searched for half an hour before the person was found safely ashore. 11/03 An upturned dinghy off the north-east coast of Guernsey, but the crew had been found safe by the time the aircraft arrived on the scene. 12/03 A search for a diver missing to the west of Sark. By the time the aircraft arrived the diver had been located and rescued by a Sark launch. 13/03 A hospital patient reported missing in Guernsey believed to be in a coastal area. After a 50 minute search it was reported that the person had been found safe. 14to16/03 12 hours total time searching for the trawler Chelaris J following report of signal from a distress beacon and the sighting of wreckage to the south of Alderney. A great deal of debris was seen but sadly four lives were lost. 17/03 A night-time search following reports of a distress beacon. The aircraft located a fishing boat which had lost its distress beacon but was not in difficulties. 18/03 A search following receipt of an unidentified PAN PAN call by CrossMa – nothing found. 19/03 An 8 year old child was reported missing in the north of Guernsey. A search was started in conjunction with Brecqhou helicopter, but was called off when the child was reported to have been found. 20/03 A search for the source of an unidentified distress beacon – nothing found. |
