Search Summary 2003

OPERATIONS

Searches undertaken during 2003 are listed below:-

/03  A RIB was reported missing from St Helier harbour.  After 40 minutes of searching, the boat was found safe in St Helier.

/03  A person was reported missing from a capsized dory near Port Bail.  A search lasting over 3 hours found no trace of the casualty

/03  A flare was sighted in the shipping lane north of Alderney.  A 3 hour search in conjunction with two helicopters and the Alderney lifeboat found no trace of a casualty.  It subsequently transpired that a yacht which had been sighted apparently sailing normally had fired the flare, but had nevertheless continued on passage to Poole where it was found safe.

/03  Following the sighting of flares by a yacht nothing was found.  It was concluded that in conditions of exceptional visibility, the lights of a landing aircraft might have been mistaken for a flare.

/03  A man had been reported overboard from a RIB off the north Brittany coast.  A 2 hour search of the area specified by the French found nothing.

/03  A red flare reported near the Roches Douvres lighthouse.  Several Guernsey yachts were found in the area – these had not seen a flare and nothing was found.

/03  A diver was missing in the shipping lane north of Alderney.  A 3 hour search in conjunction with French helicopter found nothing.

/03  While on training the crew were requested to investigate an apparent distress signal in the Pleinmont area.  Nothing was found.

/03  A sailing vessel reported missing off Roscoff.  By the time of arrival at the search area the vessel had been located safe in harbour.

/03  A swimmer missing in Cobo Bay.  The aircraft searched for half an hour before the person was found safely ashore.

/03  An upturned dinghy off the north-east coast of Guernsey, but the crew had been found safe by the time the aircraft arrived on the scene.

/03  A search for a diver missing to the west of Sark.  By the time the aircraft arrived the diver had been located and rescued by a Sark launch.

/03  A hospital patient reported missing in Guernsey believed to be in a coastal area. After a 50 minute search it was reported that the person had been found safe.

to16/03  12 hours total time searching for the trawler Chelaris J following report of signal from a distress beacon and the sighting of wreckage to the south of Alderney.  A great deal of debris was seen but sadly four lives were lost.

/03 A night-time search following reports of a distress beacon.  The aircraft located a fishing boat which had lost its distress beacon but was not in difficulties.

/03 A search following receipt of an unidentified PAN PAN call by CrossMa – nothing found.

/03  An 8 year old child was reported missing in the north of Guernsey.  A search was started in conjunction with Brecqhou helicopter, but was called off when the child was reported to have been found.

/03  A search for the source of an unidentified distress beacon – nothing found.
