Search Summary 2002Searches undertaken during 2002 are listed below:-Search 01/02 A search for flares reported between Jersey and Paimpol - nothing found. Searches 02/02, 03/02, 04/02 Search for a person overboard from a fishing vessel between Guernsey and Plymouth in conjunction with a helicopter, Salcombe and Torbay lifeboats, Brittany Ferries and fishing vessels in the area. A sighting of a possible target from the aircraft and subsequently from the Torbay lifeboat resulted in an intensive search, but nothing further was sighted. It was necessary for the aircraft to refuel in Plymouth during the course of the search. Search 05/02 A search for a person reported missing in the Greve de Lecq area of Jersey - nothing found. Search 06/02 A search for a person reported missing in the St Ouen’s Bay area of Jersey. The person was located ashore. Search 07/02 A search for flares reported between St Malo and Jersey. Nothing was found but it appears likely that the lights originated from a fireworks display in Jersey. Search 08/02 Search for a man reported overboard from a vessel south of Portland - nothing found. Search 10/02 Search for a diver missing in the vicinity of the Desormes Buoy. Nothing was found and it was established that the casualty had sunk after briefly surfacing. Search 11/02 Search following an unclear report of a vessel overdue in Jersey - nothing found. Search 12/02 Search for a person reported missing in the north of Jersey - nothing found. Search 13/02 A search in conjunction with St Peter Port lifeboat for a man missing from a dinghy in Belgreve Bay. He was found safe and well ashore. Search 14/02 Search for a missing 7 year old boy in the Petit Bot/Saints Bay area. The child was found in the Vazon Bay area. Search 15/02 Two divers missing from a vessel off Alderney were found safe and well before the aircraft reached the area. Search 16/02 A search for a flare reported west of Jersey. An object located by the aircraft’s radar and FLIR equipment was identified by the St Helier lifeboat as a wooden box. This search demonstrated the capabilities of the aircraft’s radar and FLIR, enabling the aircraft to maintain contact with a 4 foot square object from an altitude of 700 feet for 35 minutes. Search 17/02 A search for a Hobie Cat to the east of Jersey. The missing person managed to swim ashore and the aircraft located the upturned hull. Searches 18 to 20/02 A total of 8 hours were spent searching for a man reported lost overboard from a yacht in the vicinity of Les Roches Douvres. The search was conducted in conjunction with French helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. Search 21/02 A search for a man reported missing on the south coast of Guernsey. The man was subsequently found safe. Search 22/02 In severe gale conditions a search was carried out for a single-handed yacht which was overdue. During a search in darkness to the west of Les Roches Douvres the yacht was located by FLIR and identified by searchlight and the position relayed to the French rescue service Crossma which established radio contact with the yacht. Search 23/02 A search for a man reported missing in Alderney. While the aircraft was searching the Alderney police reported that the man had been found. Search 24/02 A search for a man reported missing in St Martin’s Guernsey. During the night-time search the FLIR gave good detection of people and rabbits, but the police reported that the man had been found outside the search area. Search 25/02 A search for the source of an emergency locator beacon signal. A night-time search during which several seals, seabirds and pot markers were identified using FLIR. By this time transmissions from the reported beacon had stopped. Search 26/02 A flare was sighted to the south of Guernsey. The remains of a flare were found in the St Martin’s area. |
