Search Summary 2001


Searches undertaken during 2001 are listed below:-  

Searches 1/01 to 3/01 

A search totalling 81/2 hours for an overdue Jersey fishing vessel.  Wreckage was located and the St Helier lifeboat was directed to the area.   The body of one of the 2 crew of the vessel was subsequently recovered from the shore. 

Search 4/01 

A search in very rough conditions for an emergency locator beacon reported by satellite.  Nothing was found and subsequent satellite passes did not pick up any signal.

Search 5/01 

A search for flares reported off the north-east coast of Jersey in conjunction with the Carteret lifeboat and the St Catherine’s inshore lifeboat.  Nothing found. 

Search 6/01 

A search for flares reported by a French fishing vessel off the south-east of Jersey in conjunction with both Jersey lifeboats.  It transpired that the flares were in fact fireworks on the coast of Jersey. 

Search 7/01 

A search for a person reported missing in the area of the Imperial Hotel.  The start of the search was delayed by fog and the person was later found safe and well. 

Searches 8/01 and 9/01 

A yacht was reported overdue on passage from Dielette to Concale.  The yacht was located near the Roches Douvres lighthouse and a French lifeboat was directed to the area where it took the vessel in tow.

Searches 10/01and 11/01 

A search for a crew member reported overboard from a fishing vessel to the south-west of Guernsey.  No sign of the casualty was found during more than 6 hours of searching a small well-defined area in conjunction with 4 fishing vessels, a tug and the St Peter Port lifeboat. 

Searche 12/01 

A search for a Spanish yacht reported to be in difficulties south-east of Pleinmont.  Nothing was found. 

Search 13/01 

A search for the source of an emergency locator beacon, which was found to be in St Helier harbour.  During the search the crew observed and reported a cliff fire in Jersey and the Fire Brigade was assisted in its location. 

Search 14/01 

A dive support vessel reported having lost sight of a diver.  The aircraft located the diver and the support vessel was directed to the casualty who was successfully recovered. 

Search 15/01 and 16/01 

An adult and child had been reported missing following an accident to a vessel in the Baie de Mont St Michel.  The body of the child was located by the aircraft and a French lifeboat was directed to the scene to recover it.

Search 17/01

The FLIR equipment was used to scan a vessel which had suffered an engine fire that had been extinguished to ensure that the fire had not spread.  A clear picture of the damage was obtained showing no spread permitting the Guernsey lifeboat to be recalled before reaching the scene. 

Search 18/01

A search for flares reported between Les Ecrehous and Carteret, found no vessel in distress.  Possibly fireworks on the French coast.  It is interesting to note that there were many clear FLIR returns of seals in the area. 

Search 19/01

Flares reported in the vicinity of Iles Chausey/Les Minquiers, but nothing found. 

Search 20/01

Investigation of flares reported east of Sark located a casualty within 11 minutes of take-off.  A yacht had located the vessel and Air Search assisted by passing the position to St Peter Port lifeboat. 

Search 21/01

A French yacht reported overdue was located 27 miles SW of the Hanois lighthouse.  Its position was communicated to a French lifeboat which took the vessel in tow. 

Search 22/01

A reported distress call from a French yacht off the south coast of Guernsey located no casualty. 

Search 23/01

A night time FLIR search for a French yacht reported overdue.  The vessel had been located by a French lifeboat before the aircraft arrived on scene. 

Search 24/01

A search for a person reported missing on the Guernsey cliffs, nothing found. 

Search 25/01

A speed boat calling for help by cell phone in the region of Les Ecrehous was located and the position passed to St Catherine’s lifeboat which took the vessel in tow. 

Search 26/01

While the aircraft was on passage from St Mawgan to Guernsey following an exercise, assistance was offered to Plymouth lifeboat which was seen searching for a canoeist.  The canoeist was spotted from the aircraft some way up the Erme river carrying his canoe to a car.  His position behind trees was such that he would not have been spotted in a search from the sea. 

Search 27/01

A search for an emergency locator beacon in the vicinity of Les Minquiers located nothing. 

Search 28/01

Search for a person missing on the north coast of Jersey.  The man was found by the Jersey police. 

Search 29/01

A converted trawler taking in water in the area of Les Roches Douvres was located by FLIR in a night time search and the position passed to St Peter Port lifeboat which took the vessel in tow. 

Search 30/01

A search for flares sighted near the Isle de Brehat - nothing found. 

Search 31/01 & 32/01

Search for a person missing on the north coast of Jersey.  Inshore rescue boats located a body. 

Search 33/01 & 34/01

A search for a fishing vessel reported overdue - nothing found.
