Jersey Friends of Air SearchPresident's Report 2007Year 1st July 2006 – 30th June 2007 Due to the demands of the position and as explained in my letter of 24th July, I gave notice in advance of the 2006 AGM, held on 11th September, to stand down, but offered to remain in post until the year end. The six month period proved to be reasonably busy and the following events were recorded: v The Sea Sunday Service at All Saints on 13th August was attended by Ron & Lillian McLean. v A Flyover of Lions Pride was arranged for Gorey Fete on 17th August. v The Open Day at St Catherine’s L/B Station was attended on 17th September and a flyover by Lion’s pride was arranged. v On 12th October, I had the pleasure of speaking to the Golden Age Club of St Saviour. v The Autumn Lunch was held on 29th October and Ron Baudet’s arrangements as usual, were faultless. As my agreed terminal date of 31st December approached, there were no apparent candidates to take on the position and it was agreed that for the interim, Don Filleul OBE would take the Chair. I offered to continue as a committee member in support of Don. This has proved busier than expected, but nevertheless enjoyable and fulfilling, in view of the worthy cause. The Jersey Friends rely on a host of volunteers, the committee, the box collectors, and those that support by attending the lunches, and not least the membership, which has shown a marked increase. My sincere thanks to all for their support and assistance since June 2004. Captain Brian Nibbs President Jersey Friends (up to 31st December 2006)
The departure - in January - of Brian Nibbs from this Presidency required a stand-in for which there were no volunteers - So I offered to chair meetings until a replacement was found. but no such happy event has yet materialised. .I won a private battle to substitute for the title “President” the less ostentatious “Chairman” which will hopefully be carried through at the next AGM! A start was made on the formulation of a formal Constitution for the Jersey Friends; the appointment of the Treasurer, Secretary and Advocate Peter Mourant, a Trustee, as a sub-committee to prepare a draft has resulted, after Committee consideration, in a proposal which will be presented at this year’s AGM.. My thanks to that trio. Fundraising continued to be successful, the Spring Lunch brought in £900, whilst contributions from the Parishes, donations from the various boating associations, an unexpected £500 from the French Homeowners Association and welcome support from supporters too numerous to list, kept our appeal results at a healthy level. The grant of £7000 from the Harbours Department was duly applied for and received with thanks. This year we are publishing a Christmas Card, the design of which was entrusted to Al Thomas, the JEP’s well-known cartoonist. As well as making us some money it is anticipated that good publicity will result from this venture. I am grateful to Committee members who have devoted much time to public relations - this year it seems that we have made the headlines more frequently than ever. We were particularly impressed with a fine entry in Jackson’s Magazine - contributed by Stephen Homyard with the invaluable input of our PR man Philip Jeune. I have been pleased to sit in as Chairman of the Committee for most of 2007 but look forward to the election of a younger and more active successor who can hope to emulate the very notable record of my predecessor Capt Brian Nibbs. A truly hard act to follow and I am especially pleased to thank Brian for his exemplary service to CIAS. He is now about to retire from Committee membership and I wish him a rapid return to perfect health. Don Filleul OBE Chairman, Jersey Friends of Channel Islands Air Search, June 2007
