Jersey Friends of Air SearchPresident's Report 2003
On Sunday 24th August 2003, 5 members of the Jersey Friend's
Committee, Ron McLean, secretary, John Wetherall, treasurer,Committee members
Ron Baudet and Richard Haycock and Tony Girard travelled to Guernsey for the
day to meet with the Guernsey Friends and on the journey took time out to
check the Yearly Accounts, which had to be signed off for the Auditors prior
to the Annual General Meeting, which is being held at the St Helier Yacht Club
on Thursday 28th August 2003 at 20:00 hours. It can be said that this was the
first time a Committee meeting had been "held at sea".
On arrival at St Peter Port we were met by Trustees Secretary
Ian Larby, Friend's President Julyan Gardener-Wheeler, and Vice President
Richard Corcoran at the Harbour and first stop was a nice timely lunch at the
Silver Smiths near the Airport. We were met there by crew member John
Fitzgerald and afterwards visited the Hanger, which apart from Tony
Girard, the Jersey Friend's had not seen before.
Whilst there, Search Director Roddy Ray and John Fitzgerald
gave a thorough explanation of the equipment on "Lions Pride" and we also saw
the video which had been completed by a French TV company on the operations of
Air Search - albeit in French, but we managed to get the gist of it.
After a productive afternoon, Roddy had arranged for the
visitors to go the Search and Rescue Centre at the Harbour Office, where we
were given a good explanation of the equipment there by the Duty Harbour
Officer, who incidentally had been on duty the previous evening, when a Herm
ferry had struck rocks of the island in thick fog. 170 persons were on board,
but luckily there were no injuries and everyone got off safely.
On returning to Jersey, it was thought that the meeting was
very productive and had brought the two Committees even closer.
The end of season lunch at the Jersey Pottery is being held on
Sunday 19th October 2003 sitting down at 13:30 hours and I am very glad to say
that we will have the pleasure of receiving His Excellency Lieutenant-Governor
Sir John and Lady Cheshire, our Jersey Patron, as Guests for the Lunch. Sir
John, since arriving in Jersey, has taken a close interest in Air Search and
being a pilot has even taken the controls of the Aircraft.
The cost of the lunch is £22.00 per person which includes a
half bottle of wine. The previous lunches there have been well attended and a
good amount of money has been raised either by the raffle or sponsorship. HSBC
are sponsoring this lunch as they did the last one in April.
