Guernsey Friends of Air SearchPresident's Report 2010As our 30th Anniversary year draws to a close, there have been a huge variety of events to celebrate. We arranged a commemorative flower bed on the east side of the roundabout in St Peter Port during the summer months, which was kindly sponsored by CT Freight. We launched our flag, which shows our new logo, and this was raised on the mast in August with coverage in the local press. We have been Channel Television’s partner charity during the year and they have covered various events as well adding a great deal of information and coverage on their website, and holding their annual Fashion Show in November for our benefit. We also had a display at the Guilles-Alles library during the month of March, were depicted in the Guernsey Flower Arrangement Society displays in the Town Church in May and had an article in the GBG magazine in August. Since our last AGM, we have as usual attended a variety of events to both promote the service and raise funds. We took part in the Christmas Tree Festival in the Town Church for the third year running. We held a quiz at La Villette Hotel in February, raising £300. In June, we had the usual stall at the Classic Car Show at Saumarez Park, and we held an Open Garden by kind permission of Mr & Mrs Mark Bunce, which raised nearly £1300. July saw the open day at the Guernsey Aero Club with the aircraft also on display, and we held a flag day covering town and the Bridge in August. We also have our Annual Draw which is a regular source of income. Our collecting-boxes, both at the airport and around the island, together with the sale of merchandise and used stamps, all help to bring in extra funds. Whilst this income is very necessary, we continue to be extremely grateful to the local businesses and companies who make donations by holding events such as dress down days. These donations are vital to our being able to maintain the level of funding needed to maintain the service. I should also mention Edward Pinnegar, a young man from Alderney, who has written a book called the History of Aviation in Alderney which was launched in August. Edward is kindly donating some of the proceeds to the service, which already amounts to £500. Thanks to the efforts of the Friends and the support of local people and businesses, I am delighted to report that in the financial year ending in June, the Friends were able to pay over to the Trustees a total of £40,000. The job of raising money certainly does not get any easier, particularly with so many local charities looking for financial support, but, as always, I am heartened by people’s obvious affection and support for Channel Islands Air Search. Both Sheila Cornelius and Bob Twist have decided not to stand again this year due to other commitments, and we thank them both for their help and support. Ralph Burridge has also resigned from the committee, and we thank Ralph for his many years of service in Alderney. Finally as always, I must thank our Friends in the other islands for their continued support, and all the Friends, helpers and supporters of Channel Islands Air Search who have helped us achieve the results of the last twelve months. I should also like to offer my own thanks to all the members of the Committee for their support. We must also remember the work done by the Jersey Friends and, of course, the huge contribution made by the crew, without which there would be no service. Thank you all for your continued support.
